Stephen Philips Chartered Designer Product Design

Stephen is an Associate Product Designer leading Arup’s Product Design team. He is a Chartered Designer and a full member of the Chartered Society of Designers. Most of the products that Stephen designed are in use today, winning a number of internationally recognised design awards. He has over 30 years of experience in all aspects of industrial design across a range of product categories, markets and scales.

Stephen has implemented design strategies, product and application research, concept design, human factors and form development. He has in depth experience of 3D CAD CAM modelling, prototyping, design for manufacture, closed loop design, product branding, materials and their production and recycling processes. Stephen’s key role is the application of his product design and production knowledge and experience to Arup’s global multi-disciplinary and product development projects.

He was the Design Director for an award-winning office furniture systems manufacturer, designing several successful commercial product ranges achieving significant global recognition. Stephen gained in depth experience in design strategy, concept design and design development including material selection, sourcing sub-contractor factories with appropriate manufacturing processes for the production of components parts and for setting up component production in Europe and the Far-East. He has experience as a product design consultant developing a number of new technology and innovation products that have improved on existing product typologies.

Stephen is a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College, London and has talked about product design at conferences, design academies and universities.
