CSD CEP Design Student Prize profiles: Erki Klamas Assoc.CSD, BA Automotive & Transport Design

Each year, we honour graduating CSD CEP student designers worldwide through both in-person and online award ceremonies.

The CSD CEP Student Prize is awarded yearly to up to three design students from each CSD Accredited course, who have demonstrated great work throughout their course, recognising their talents and constant hard work.

As part of our celebrations, we’re showcasing talented CSD CEP Student Prize winner Erki Klamas Assoc.CSD from Staffordshire University. Join us as we dive into his unique design philosophy and uncover his exciting plans for the future.

Tell us a little about your work:

For my major project at Staffordshire University, I wanted to challenge myself to design a vehicle which is usually associated with pure functionality rather than aesthetics.

After undertaking some research, I settled on a semi-truck/HGV, as this is one of the most commonly seen industrial vehicles around the world, and apart from minor brand rebadges and design changes, they all look very similar.

Immediately I began looking at existing vehicles and manufacturers and the relationship between Volvo / Volvo Trucks and Polestar. I knew Polestar would be the perfect company since it has a well-established brand identity, and it has yet to enter the logistical market which gave me a lot of freedom in the design.

I designed the Polestar Eclipse concept keeping in mind what Polestar’s entry into logistics could look like, and how the future of modern trucks could potentially turn out.

The Eclipse has clean and efficient branding, colouring complimenting the Polestar palette, and a generous and realistic amount of badges. Mainly, the design has an ideology behind it which remains true to the ethics and strategies of Polestar, and I feel it is a beautiful testament to what the brand has created over the last few years.

What inspired you to become a designer?

My main inspiration to become a designer was my interest in cars from a young age. I have enjoyed various forms of motorsport since I can remember and as a child, I was fortunate enough to experience many car shows and air shows, which has only fuelled my interest in the area.

I have followed a creative pathway for as long as possible, starting with Design and Technology in high school, moving to 3D design in college and then joining the Transport Design course at Staffordshire University, which has boosted all of my skills and confidence in ways I could never imagine just three years ago. This has only strengthened my confidence to pursue my journey to get into the car industry and work on something I enjoy so much.

What does being awarded the CEP Student Prize mean to you?

My award was for being ‘most-improved’ which means a lot to me, especially as the result of a project I am very proud of. The award is a huge reminder of my hard work and how far I have come during my studies. I will be forever grateful for the academic staff and classmates who have supported me throughout my university journey.

From the beginning of the process to the end, I have had a strong network of people around me, who I can always trust and rely on whenever something seems impossible or difficult. It’s reassuring to know that these same people will remain in my network, as I begin to get my foot into the door of the car industry.

What’s next for you?

Next, I will start my Master’s degree at Staffordshire University. I’m excited to commence my studies, as it will ultimately be the year where I can prove myself as a professional and reliable asset to a design team.

I will be working on my digital skills, from modelling to visualisation. This is the team I would love to be a part of and where my passion lies. After this, I will continue to develop my skills and aim to land a job in the appropriate field.

Where can we find you?

You can find me via the CSD Find-a-Designer here.
